Many members of the 1st U.S. Colored Cavalry (and their survivors) described the regiment’s participation in skirmishes on the Virginia peninsula. As the troops advanced westward from Fort Monroe towards Richmond, they risked injury, illness, and death. Certain locations along the James River are mentioned repeatedly: Fort Monroe (Elizabeth City County, red); Wilson’s Wharf, Harrison’s Landing, and Bermuda Hundred (Charles City County, yellow); Fort Powhatan and City Point (Prince George County, green); Deep Bottom and Hopewell (Henrico County, red). The Chickahominy Swamp is along the Chickahominy River in northern Henrico County.
