“Black veterans of the Civil War gather for a reunion in Norfolk circa 1910. The forty-one men in the photograph were likely recruited in the area during the Civil War, served in black Union regiments, and then became members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). Most of the men recruited in the area had been formerly enslaved.”

Thanks for your question. The men in this photograph aren’t named. At least three members of the 1st USCC were GAR members. Peter C. Adams, Company C was a member. I’ve posted a blog entry for Adams’ ceremonial swords. Alexander Wilson, Company I was a GAR member. Lewis Dawley, Company B was also a member. I’ve posted a blog entry for his Grand Army of the Republic, Shaw Post, Number 5, Norfolk, Virginia. Shaw Post was among 59 GAR Posts in Virginia and North Carolina as of July 27, 1871. The whereabouts of many post records remains unknown. Unfortunately the links for these men and the GAR can’t be displayed in the comment box. Click on GAR in he “Tags” frame to see these entries.
