
Many of the White officers serving in the 1st U.S. Colored Cavalry started their careers as enlisted men in New York cavalry regiments that were organized in the rural parts of the state. Towns mentioned in the pension application of Isabella Cass (widow of George Cass, F&S) can be seen on this 1888 map:
Delaware County (Harpersville)
Otsego County (Maryland, Schevenus, Westford)
Schoharie County (Franklinton)
Cram’s township and rail road map of New York is held at the Library of Congress. The catalog record notes “Indexed township and county map showing relief by hachures, drainage, and cities and towns. Railroad lines are identified by initials.”
