This application is straightforward enough until the officer’s widow reveals family secrets and unconventional living arrangements. Events described in this lengthy pension file include residences in Florida, New Jersey, and New York; the Spanish-American War and World War I; and foreign nationals.

I moved to Saugerties NY as a bride in 1968 and worked In Kingston in Ulster. Very rural, very white. There must be a story here given Charles felt compelled to enlist. Sculptor Augusta Savage also took up residence in saugerties. When I discovered that I thought she must’ve been hiding from something. Turns out she was. Small world. This place is in the Catskills 90 miles north of NYC on the Hudson River. Lots of revolutionary war history. Sojourner Truth made an appearance in Kingston Courthouse. Hmmm…maybe that’s what got Charles’s attention. Another item to add to my list to research. Thanks, Leslie.
