This blog is based on research notes that I made when I was researching my maternal great-great-grandfather Edward R. Pitt and his brother William Thomas Pitt of Norfolk County, Virginia. Theirs were the first folders I looked at. The search expanded to the men who served with them in Company K and then grew to include their comrades in other companies. When I needed a break, I requested a soldier’s name simply because it was unusual.
I quickly felt overwhelmed by what interested me. File folders became spreadsheets which became this blog.
Be aware: This is not an every-name index. It includes individuals whose statements provided direct information about the soldier (or claimant): those who were identified as family members, close friends and neighbors, fellow veterans, employers, former owners. Selected individuals provided more complete information about a topic or event than others in the application.
